Our Story

Mug.Cycle was born from Tuatua. Mug.Cycle is a not-for-profit service helping cafes and workplaces in Wellington reduce their use of single-use service-ware by providing a supply of donated secondhand service-ware and the resources to eliminate single-use waste.

Tuatua is an award-winning cafe working towards a zero waste and circular economy, using local suppliers that supply in returnables or unpackaged, with a shop space selling sustainable provisions, reusables and locally produced ceramics. Also headquarters for Mug.Cycle, an initiative helping Wellington cafes, businesses and events reduce single use waste by providing them with second hand rescued mugs and sustainable resources. We supply cafes and workplaces with fleets of mugs in custom made crates, as well as providing mug stands, signage and all the best ways of encouraging customers and staff to choose a reusable option (a mug)

We use Celcius Coffee, which is organic and fair trade because that matters, and at the end of the day take the coffee grounds home with any other food scraps to turn into compost that we use to grow more vegetables. Ingredients are brought into Tuatua as often as possible in the bike trailer attached to the bike Simon cycles in on. We use locally produced ingredients and sell all our drinks in bottles that are reused - rest-assured you won’t find a single-use cup or Coca Cola at this establishment (bad karma!)
